Manhattan - Spiel de Jahres (Game of the Year) 1994
Race to build skyscrapers around the world in this game of high-stakes high-rises! Corner the global market by controlling cities, and earn prestige with the tallest tower on earth! On each turn, you can bolster an existing building, break new ground, or take over an opponent's edifice and claim it as your own. It's your choice what will be most... constructive.
In this new edition of the classic Manhattan, fortunes can change in the blink of an eye, and only the most masterful mogul will come out on top!
Set up
Manhattan is played in 4 rounds. Each round consists of 6 turns.
Every player receives 4 building cards. They then each select 6 blocks from their reserve and places them on their own player board. They must choose carefully as these are the only 6 blocks they will be able to play this round.
Play
On their turn, each player plays a card from their hand. The card cannot be rotated or placed on another side of the game board.
On each building card, a section of the grid is marked in red. This indicates on which sector of a city the player is allowed to build. The player picks one of their building blocks from their player board and places it on a space that corresponds to the marked section of their card. If placing a block on an existing building, they must have at least the same number of stories of the current owner of the building. They then take control the building.
After they have played, they draw a card to ensure they have 4 cards in their hand at all times.
Game end
When all players have placed all six of their building blocks, the round ends and players tally their points in three different way: tallest building on the board, most buildings owned in a city and individual buildings owned. Owning a building means that a block of your color sits on top of it.
The game ends after the 4th round, when all building blocks have been placed. The player who has the most points wins!
